KOLKATA: The stage is set for the crowning of a new champion when Mumbai take on Himachal Pradesh in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) Trophy at the Eden Gardens here on Saturday.
Both teams deservedly earned their spots for the top flight and lifting the trophy for the first time in its 15th edition should serve as an added incentive for the boys in both camps to charge into the competition.
Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane is keen to add the Syed Mushtaq Trophy to the team’s trophy cabinet, which has 41 Ranji Trophy titles and four Vijay Hazare crowns. While on paper they might start as favourites, it won’t be cake-piercing against a side that has been on the rise of late.
The experienced team led by Rishi Dhawan, who won the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, will give everything to win another title for the first time.
“We are carrying the same momentum from our triumph in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. We are not trying anything new. Everyone knows their job and carries the responsibility,” said Himachal’s highest run-getter in this tournament Akash Vasisht, focusing on the team environment ahead of the final.
On a batting paradise, like Eden Gardens, Himachal will need to score anything above 170 runs to put pressure on Mumbai.
