KOLKATA: Excited about his much-awaited T20 International debut in the upcoming New Zealand series, promising top-order batsman Shubman Gill wants to show that he belongs at the top level.
A day after getting a national call-up in India’s T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand, Gill smashed his first century in the format to beat Punjab in the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy here.
“This is an important milestone for me, especially when it came at the Eden,” said the former Kolkata Knight Riders batsman after his career-best 55-ball 126.
Punjab won the match against Karnataka by nine runs.
“Especially as a starter when you spend time on the field and score runs, it gives you a lot of confidence,” Gill said.
On his selection for the T20Is, Gill said, “It’s a good feeling to be picked for the Indian team in any format. Now I have to show that I deserve this chance.”
Gill mastered the conditions at Eden Gardens and toyed with the Karnataka attack after being given a reprieve on 34.
“On this pitch you get seam movements early in the power play. Later it becomes easier to bat.
“I made a mistake in the previous game and went for a big shot instead of waiting for the right time. So, I wanted to take my time. It feels good to execute the plan well,” he added.
Even as India struggle with KL Rahul’s indifferent form in the ongoing T20 World Cup, the 23-year-old Gill has been on a roll, having recently scored a maiden international hundred – 130 – in an ODI against Zimbabwe.
He was also in fine form in county cricket and scored his first century there for Glamorgan.
