“He is quite relaxed, which helps the group. He is open to suggestions and ideas. We have built a good, relaxed relationship where we challenge each other, push each other. My job is to support him and his vision and for him give some space to focus on his own game as well. Him playing well is good for us; he is a class player. If he plays well, we are going to be a competitive team,” Dravid said in a video that was posted by ICC, said.
Rohit said he is privileged to represent his country for the eighth consecutive time in the tournament.
“It doesn’t happen to everyone. I’m really happy and honored. I’ve developed as a player and understand what the team wants from me as a player and as a captain. It’s been a long journey, has it enjoy and look forward to more,” he added.
Star batsman Virat Kohli said Rohit has the vision to make India win and has worked hard with the rest of the management to get the squad to where it is now.
“The environment inside the dressing room is brilliant. Credit must go to them (Rohit and management). Everyone is comfortable in their roles,” Virat added.
Dinesh Karthik, Rohit’s teammate from the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team, said, “He (Rohit) pushed himself into various corners skill-wise and got better with time. He was a bit like wine and got better with time .”
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who played under Rohit as part of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, said that Rohit has come leaps and bounds as a captain.
“He gives you enough freedom and takes the onus…He tells us to do what we want to do and he will come back in case of failure,” he added.
The Proteas head into the match after a 104-run win over Bangladesh. India also won their previous match against Netherlands by 56 runs.
India top Group 2 with four points and two wins from two matches. South Africa is in third position with three points and one win in two matches. Their other match against Zimbabwe yielded no result and both teams shared points.
