Matthew Perry made a shocking revelation in his brand new memoir, Friends, lovers and the big terrible thing: He went out Julia Roberts! The Friends alum (53) candidly recalled how his short-lived romance with the beautiful woman actress, 55, and how his insecurities encouraged him to cast the actress, who he admitted was probably out of his league to begin with. “[Friends co-creator] Martha Kauffman approached me and said I should probably send flowers to Julia Roberts. You mean the biggest-star-in-the-universe Julia Roberts? “Sure, great, why?” I said,” he wrote, as reported by Our Weekly. “It turned out that Julia was offered the post-Super Bowl episode in season 2 and she would only do the show if she could be in my storyline. Let me say that again—she would only do the show if she could be in my storyline. (Did I have a good year or what?).”

Matthew then said that he had sent Julia three dozen roses and a paper explaining quantum physics, the latter at her request. The gestures won Julia’s heart, and she appeared on the show. By the time the episode aired in 1996, Julia and Matthew were a couple. Unfortunately, their relationship fizzled shortly after the episode aired. Recalling the split, Matthew admitted he dumped the gorgeous star because he was too insecure to be with her. His insecurities were fueled by his addiction to pain medication.

“Dating Julia Roberts was too much for me. I was constantly sure that she would break up with me – why wouldn’t she? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable,” he revealed. “So instead of the inevitable pain of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She might have considered herself to sleep it off with a TV guy, and TV guy has now broken up with her.”

In his book, Matthew opened up about his decades-long battle with addiction, which saw him use Vicodin, Methadone, Xanax and alcohol. Throwing in his beloved sense of humor, he joked: “People would be surprised to know that I’ve been mostly sober since 2001. Except for about sixty or seventy little accidents over the years.”

While promoting his tell-all book, he confessed that his co-star Jennifer Aniston, 53, was the one who checked in with him the most amid his struggles. “I’m very grateful to her for that,” said the distraught actor Diane Sawyer during their chat that aired Oct. 28 on ABC. He also revealed that “Jenny”, as he affectionately called her, confronted him about his excessive drinking. “Imagine how scary a moment that was,” he said.

Naturally, Jennifer came up in his memoir while he was discussing Friends — and even his love life. The Fools storm in star admitted he tried to provoke the Morning show actress’ interest in him before they become co-stars, but his efforts fell flat. Fortunately, by the time they started working together, he noted that he and Jen “were able to sail right past the past and focus on [they] both found the best work Hollywood had to offer.”
