Can’t have Jasprit Bumrah break 10 days before T20 World Cup: Roger Binny | Cricket News

BENGALURU: Newly elected BCCI president Roger Inside reiterated Thursday that there is an urgent need to address players who are frequently injured, saying “you can’t have a Jasprit Bumrah 10 days before the World Cup kicks off”.
Bumrah was excluded from the T20 World Cup with a back injury three days before the Indian team was due to fly out for Australia. With Mohammad Shami battling COVID-19 at the same time, the BCCI waited until the 11th hour for him to become fully fit before naming him as Bumrah’s replacement.
Binny also touched on this subject after he took over as the head of the BCCI on Tuesday.
“We need to address why and how players get injured so badly. We need to address why they break so easily. Not just now but also in the last four five years,” Binny said at a felicitation ceremony organized by Karnataka. State Cricket Association here.
“It’s not that we don’t have good coaches or trainers. Whether the load is too much, whether they’re playing too many formats, something needs to be done. That’s my priority.
“You cannot have a Bumrah who breaks down 10 days before the World Cup and then who is going to replace him. It is important (to address this),” the 67-year-old said.
Central contracts for local players not necessary, better sheets are
Binny emphasized the importance of preparing better wickets in domestic cricket besides listing the standard of Ranji Trophy.
“The pitches are still too friendly, they are unsuitable for the fast bowlers. We also have to look at infrastructure. 30-40 thousand fans come to stadiums (for India matches), they have to be comfortable.”
On the need for central contracts for local cricketers on the lines of Indian cricketers, he said, “The local players are looked after very well. They have good facilities and they stay in good places. I don’t think there is any need for that. at the moment (contracts).
“What is needed is to raise the standard of Ranji trophy, it is the premier tournament of the country. Not so long ago there was Irani Cup going on, how many people knew? We have to change that,” said he said.
On the upcoming women’s IPL in March, he added: “Surprisingly, not as popular as men’s cricket, but women’s cricket is going to become very popular. The game has taken giant strides in the last two three years. Hope a lot of people come to watch to the tournament.”
