Nicki Minaj took to social media to air her grievances after the Grammys announced that her song, “Super Freaky Girl,” would be considered in the “Pop” category instead of “Rap” for 2023. Nicki explained that she was not happy was with the Recording Academy’s decision because she didn’t feel it was fairly applied to other crossover rappers. “I have no problem being moved out of the RAP category as long as we are ALL treated FAIRLY,” Nicki tweeted. “If SFG moved 2B then so does “Big Energy”! ANY 1 who says otherwise is just a Nicki hater or troll.”

“Big Energy” is a song by up and coming rapper, Latto. In a lengthy Instagram video, Nicki opened up about her frustrations. She claimed that the Recording Academy’s decision to move her out of the Rap category was part of a “concerted effort to give newer artists things they really don’t deserve over people who did. [it] for many years.” Nicki pointed out that the same producers were used for “Super Freaky Girl” and “Big Energy,” so she believes that if one gets moved to the Pop category, then the other should too.

When Latto found out about Nicki’s comments, she made up her mind Twitter to clap back. “Damn, I can’t win for losing,” she tweeted without directly referring to Nicki. “I can’t even celebrate all these awards/noms.” Then Nicki started getting heated and blamed Latto for not standing up for Nicki in her battle with the Grammys. “This Karen has probably mentioned my name in over 100 interviews,” she tweeted, eventually deleting. “Say she waited in line for Pink Friday with her Barbie necklace on, bangs, pink hair…but today scratch decided to keep quiet; rather than speaking for the Black woman she called her greatest inspiration.”

While Nicki revealed that Latto texted her about the situation, Nicki was upset that the rising star didn’t speak out about it publicly. Latto defended herself, explaining that she didn’t like what Nicki was referring to her song as she tries to prove her point. She also accused Nicki of subtweeting her with negative messages in the months leading up to this drama. “I didn’t want to do internet s*** w. som1 I looked up to,” she wrote. “Just like the first time I guessed you were asking about your constant subtweets. I wanted to speak up because like I said, I agree, but the way you’re doing it seems malicious.”

In another message, Latto referred to Nicki’s age, writing: “You are literally older than my mom trying to be a bully.” The age comment got Nicki going, as she snapped back, “Age shaming when you look like YOU the one pushing 40. Age shaming but begging for a feature. Imagine what the genes will do in 10 years. Ah so you in your 20s. Ok then. At least it matches your album sales. You sold 20K, right? Crazy you flopped. That’s why you’re really mad.”

Nicki then proceeded to share old DMs between her and Latto, where Latto asked her to cooperate. “Every DM from scratch is about a feature,” she explained. “I was friendly every time. But scratched down feels like she’s been going behind the scenes with a few different white men (won’t name right now). Nicki went on to call Latto a “titled Karen who blames others for her album flop.” She also continued to insist that Latto’s real issues are with her because Nicki has turned down a potential collaboration on more than one occasion.

Things got even more heated when Latto referred to Nicki’s husband, Kenneth Petty, and his previous rape conviction. “Super freaky grandma is married AND related to fucking rapists,” she said. “You’re not out to bully me B****! My idol has become a rival.” Nicki responded, “1. Didn’t care about rap when she begged for features. 2. Didn’t care Kodak [Black]say past. 3. Didn’t care about the accusations made about Dr. Luke who produced Big Energy did not. 4. Newsflash scrapes off. I have never raped anyone. I have inspired millions. You are one of them BOZO. You continue to allow these bozos to rape the WORD being raped when they are dragged and not hold them accountable because they don’t actually care about REAL LIFE rape victims.”

The feud between Nicki and Latto continued for some time. eventually, Nicki deleted most of her tweets about the situation.
